A Series of Tubes #22 - Open Office XML and ISO approval

Sponsored by:  ITRadio.com.au
Summary:

After months of deliberation International Standards Organisation national bodies, including Standards Australia, will convene this Friday to decide whether to support Ecma Open Office XML as a new global standard for document file formats.

If you've been paying attention you'll know that this standard was originally defined by Microsoft and that's got a lot of people worried. After all Microsoft hasn't been known as a good friend of all things open in the past. We'll be hearing from some folk from Microsoft to find out how open they're prepared to be on this issue.

On today's podcast:

  • Patrick Gray from itradio.com.au brings us up-to-date with the latest news in networking and systems integration
  • Gray Knowlton, Worldwide Lead for the Office Technical Product Management team at Microsoft, discusses the imminent vote
  • Sarah Bond, Platform Strategy Manager with Microsoft Australia talks about the local impact
  • Jason Harrop, MD of Expression Engineering, is developing code to the Ecma Open Office XML standard
  • Dimension Data's Peter Menadue contemplates the ISO decision
